Wood Patch Work of Karnataka

This popular craft of Karnataka is still widely practised. Rosewood inlay work which is done using various shades and hues of wood shavings is obtained from elaborate woodwork. The pattern is traced onto a piece of rosewood of suitable shape and size after which wood chips in various shades of brown, yellow and beige are used to fill in the pattern. Designs requiring other hues are created by painting directly on to the picture. This wood collage has to be assembled very carefully in order to have a neat inset of chips. The whole picture is then given a coating of rich glossy polish. The themes found in this artform include rural scenes, historical depictions, religious figures of deities and vivid examples of nature in all its scenic beauty.
