Terracotta Roof Tiles of Orissa

Terracotta roof tiles of Orissa are found predominantly in the Sambalpur district and are made partially by hand and partially on wheels. Black and red clay is mixed to make roof tiles of terracotta. These tiles have shapes half tubes and figures of chirping birds, frolicking monkeys, lizards, turtles, bears, demons etc. Such tiles beautify the roof tops all over Orissa and belived to ward off the evil eye. The design and looks of the tiles are also considered a status symbol in the country side.
