Shell Craft of West Bengal

Conch craft of West Bengal has a close significane to the rich culture of its state. The newly wed bride wears the bangles made out of conch for the first on her wedding day. These bangles pass the message of her nuptial. Conch shells are also blown in the homes and temples and are considered very auspicious.

The craftspersons keep the interest of entire country and design many different patterns and shapes of bangles. Decoration and engraving on conch shells are done with a variety of files. The surface of the conch is hard and is difficult to slice it. Craftspersons use diamond cutter which has sharp teeth to cut the hard surface. The craftspersons also design brooches, pendants, finger rings and ear rings.
