Sawantwadi (once a princely state) is one of the places for traditional lacquerware craft and ganjifa playing cards. The fruits and vegetables carved from a light wood such as pangara and hale, are completely realistic. The traditional craftsmen are known as chittorees or picture makers who skillfully made round lacquered highly pictorial ganjifa playing cards, painted cradles and boxes. Most of the items were painted with religious and mythological figures.
