Cane, Bamboo, Grass, Fibre of Delhi

Craft of making various utility items using cane, bamboo and grass is practised in India for ages. A special type of grass which is golden white in colour is available in plenty around the national capital Delhi and Haryana. This tall grass is known as Sarkanda grass (Saccharum spontaneous). Chairs and stools of tis fibre are most popular though other items like baskets, chairs, waste paper basket and rays can also be seen. The long strips of this grass are weaved in criss-cross fashion and tied with cords made of munj grass or colourful cotton. Sometimes plastic is also found.
