Bronze Icon Casting of Andhra

In Andhra Pradesh, Bronze icon making of various Hindu deity is ancient and traditional.The craftsmen are from Dornakambala and Perumallapalli in the Chitoor district and Dowlaiswaram in East Godavari. The craftsmen carefully studied Silpashastra, whose verses dhyana and instructed the craftsperson about the aesthetics and other physical attributes of the deities along with its characteristics and symbolism. The craft is hereditary and is passed from generation to generation. The models are first made of wax and several layers of clay is coated on them. The molten alloy is then poured in thin stream in the mould which is broken in such a way that the head of the icon comes out first. This is considered as good omen.
